Football is played in just about every country in the world and has been one of the most popular Special Olympics sports for many years.  For over 30 years, Special Olympics GB has supported footballers in training and competition at local, regional, national and international levels.

The beauty of football, as with most Special Olympics sports, is that it can be played by pretty much anyone, regardless of age, gender or ability level.

Using Special Olympics’ competition pathway, anyone with a learning disability can play football, at any level of competition. We have grown the number of footballers we support in training, and have increased the number of competitions they enter into, both locally and internationally.  However, if you ask our football athletes what they enjoy most about football, most of them will say “playing matches”.

We will be work with the Scottish Football Association, Special Olympics clubs, Special Olympics regions and Football Clubs of all levels, to provide more regional and national competition for our athletes.

But as the saying goes, “You’ve got to be in it to win it!”

Now is a great time to get involved in Special Olympics GB football, whether you are already playing football, or not.  With more opportunities coming at regional and national levels for all ability levels, now is the time to get in touch and talk about football in Lothian.
